Unknown armed gunmen attacked one of the female hostels at the University of Ibadan on Friday morning leaving two students injured. The armed men numbering about 10 invaded the Obafemi Awolowo Hall around 1:30 am and carted away valuables including phones, laptops and cash belonging to the students in the operation that lasted for hours.
Eyewitnesses told Tribune Online that the robbers who seem to have a knowledge of the hostel specifically told the students they will be back. They said the robbers had left before campus security and men attached to Sango, Ojoo, Bodija police stations and men of the Operation BURST arrived at the scene at around 2:30 am.Sources informed Tribune Online that the injured students have been taken to Jaja clinic inside the campus.Investigation has, however, commenced to identify and arrest the perpetrators.
One of the eyewitnesses who won’t want her name in print for security reasons said: “My block was not affected, it was only Block A, B and C. Around 2:00 a.m., the thieves entered the hall, the seven of them, all males were armed.“They were so familiar with the hostel, and they took people’s phones and laptops. A lady was assaulted with a sharp weapon and was sustained a deep cut. She has been rushed to Jaja (the university health centre) for treatment.
“The thieves threatened that they were coming back later. Our security men only came after the armed robbers had left.“The school should provide us with proper security. They should employ uniformed and armed men who can protect us, not just people with whistles.
“I want to believe that the ban of bikes is the cause of the current security problem.“Since the ban of the bikes, the rate of robbery has increased,” she added.Efforts to reach the Director of the Public Communication of the institution, Mr. Olatunji Oladejo proved abortive.Several calls made to his line were not answered. He is yet to reply a text message sent to him by Tribune Online correspondent as of the time of filing this report
