A leading civil society organization, Campaign for Democracy, CD, has called on the Senate to reject the nomination of Dr Muheeba Farida as the new chairman of the Federal Character Commission.
The position of CD was made known by Pastor Ifeanyi Odili, the National General Secretary of Campaign for Democracy.
According to Pastor Odili, theCampaign for Democracy received the “nomination of Dr. Muheeba Farida Dankaka, from Kwara state of North central, as the new chairman of federal character commission with serious concern.”
The CD accused government of misusing and abusing power and describes the nomination of Dr. Muheeba Farida Dankaka as a violation of the basic principle of federal character. The CD also accused President Buhari of violating the core value of the Commission and philosophy upon which it was founded by nominating Dr Muheeba Dankaka as chairman of the commission.
CD describes the Federal Character Commission (FCC) as a Federal Executive body that was established to implement and enforce the Federal Character Principle of fairness and equity in distribution of public offices and socioeconomic infrastructures among various federating units of Nigeria.
CD further describes as disturbing that since the inception ofthe federal character commission, it has fallen short of its own standard, and consequently made nonsense of the whole concept of the commission, as well as democracy as an institution.
CD describes Nigerian leaders as ethnic jingoists, bigots, promoters of racism and ethnic haters with serious acts of prejudice, hostility and feelings towards some ethnic group in Nigeria in various degrees, which is more particular in the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.
CD also passed a vote of non confidence on the members of the national assembly, accusing them of not doing enough, and described them to be people with limited or no basic knowledge of ethos of democratic which bothers on equity, justice and fairness. The rubrics and ethos of democracy the world over is equitable distribution of commonwealth and equal distribution of positions, but when all these are lacking, democracy becomes tasteless and meaningless. It is also no longer government of generally participation but oppressive and government of exclusion.
According to CD, Prof Abdul Raheem Oba, the immediate past substantive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission, is from Ilorin, Kwara state of North Central. Dr. Muheeba Farida Dankaka, the new nominee for the same chairmanship position is also from Kwara State of North central, which is in violation to the charter of FEDERAL CHARACTER as seen above.CD argued that all three geopolitical zones have held the position of Chairman of the commission while no one from southern region have been privileged to occupy the office.
“Having reminisced about former chairmen as seen bellow, we are constrained to issue this warning to President Muhammadu Buhari to reverse the nomination of Dr. Muheeba Farida Dankaka; and desist immediately from his brutal exhibition of ethnic chauvinism”, the CD further stated that all former substantive chairmen of the conmission namely; Alhaji Adamu Fika (Wazirin Fika) from Yobe State (North East), Alhaji. Bello Kafabai, from Katsina State (North West) and Prof. Oba AbdulRaheem (Talba Ilorin) from Kwara State (North Central), are from the northern part of Nigeria.
Furthermore, apart from Barr Abayomi Sheba who is from Ondo State of southeest geopolitical, all other acting Chairmen of the FCC namely Alhaji Muhammadu Ari-Gwaska from northcentral zone, Alhaji Ibrahim Funtua from Katsina of Northwest geopolitical zone, Alhaji Muhammad Bello Alkali from Kebbi State of Northwest geopolitical zone, Dr. Shettima Bukar Abba from Borno State of Northeast geopolitical zone.the incumbent acting chaieman, Amb Shinkafi from Zamfara State of northwest geopolitical – whose tenure ended on Monday April 20, 2020 after serving two tenures in office, all hail from the Northern part of Nigeria.
CD advised President Muhammadu Buhari to save his face and withdraw the nomination of Dr. Muheeba Farida Dankaka. It also advised the Senate to reject the nomination and throw the list into the dustbin.
