Covid-19: Biden bans South Africa citizens, others from travelling to US

US president Joe Biden is undergoing an extremely busy schedule doing what Americans are terming as “cleaning the mess that former President Donald Trump created in 4 years”. In just a few days since his inauguration, Biden has lifted several bans that Trump had imposed including the travel ban on Muslims and African nations. He has also vowed to rejoin the World Health Organization(WHO) that Trump had left last year. As such, Biden has received praises from all over the world for his incredible efforts towards unifying nations.

While at it, Biden has now signed an executive order imposing a travel ban to South African citizens and non-US citizens who have recently been in South Africa.

Speaking to Reuters, a senior US public health Officer said the step is aimed to contain the spread of the new variant of Covid-19 that is spreading at an alarming rate in South Africa and the UK.

The entry ban will also affect almost all non-US citizens who have been in Brazil, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and 26 countries in Europe that allow travel across open borders.

“We are adding South Africa to the restricted list because of the concerning variant present that has already spread beyond South Africa,” said Dr. Anne Schuchat, the CDC’s principal deputy director, in an interview Sunday.
