EDITORIAL: Lauretta Onochie’s Partisanship, Dishonesty Disqualification For INEC’s Job

On Thursday, a Personal Assistant on digital media to President Muhammadu Buhari, Ms Lauretta Onochie, informed the Senate that she has long ceased to be a member of the ruling All Progressive Congress.

Ms Onochie, who appeared before the upper chamber for screening following her nomination for the post of Electoral Commission at the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, by the President, has met stiff opposition from Nigerians and opposition owing to her affiliation with the ruling party in the country.

When asked by a member of the Senate of her relationship with the APC, Ms Onochie informed her audience that she ceased to be a member of the party since the conclusion of the 2019 elections.

Her response did not go down with Nigerians, particularly the opposition PDP.

When Headline News365 checked for the facts on the matter, it observed that the APC register of Ward 4 in Aniocha north local government area of Delta state still has the name of Ms Lauretta Onochie as member. Specifically, her name was listed number 2 on the register.

Furthermore, Ms Onochie in an affidavit she swore at the Abuja division of the Federal High Court on 30th June 2021, affirmed her membership of the APC, which she stated in paragraph 3 of the court document.

Going by the undisputed facts above, Headline News365 is of the belief, and agrees with the opposition PDP, that Ms Onochie is unfit for the INEC’s job as a result of her partisan bias towards the APC that she is a member at present, and her dishonesty before the Senate.
