Senator Dino Melaye
KOGI WEST SENATORIAL
Chairman, Senate Committee on Federal Capital Territory
RE: THE CONNIVANCE OF THE NIGERIA POLICE FORCE,
IN A DESPERATE PLOT TO ASSASSINATE ME
13th October 2018
His Excellency, Muhamadu Buhari
The President and Commander -In-Chief of the
Federal Republic of Nigeria
Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.
Your Excellency Sir,
It is with humility and great respect to your office
that I am writing to you, to intimate you of the plan
of the Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, and
several attempts, in active connivance of the
Nigeria Police, to assassinate my person.
Your Excellency Sir, as a Distinguished Senator of
the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I have been
vociferous in the condemnation of the poor
performance of the Kogi State Government under
Yahaya Bello. Consequent upon this fact, I have
received politically motivated attacks on my life
and political career by my traducers using the
Nigeria Police, especially, the Commissioner of
Police, Kogi, State.
REASONS BEHIND THE POLITICALLY MOTIVATED ATTACKS ON MY PERSON BY GOVERNOR YAHAYA BELLO
I have never hidden my displeasure at the dismal governance in Kogi State, under Yahaya Bello. The Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, had starved civil servants in Kogi State of the payment of their salaries. I have always been vociferous in the condemnation of the failed government in Kogi State, under Yahaya Bello.
My growing political popularity now threatens Governor Yahaya Bello. The Only way he can stop me, having failed, after spending billions of naira, meant for the payment of the salaries of civil servants in the state, on the botched recall process, is to assassinate me.
Governor Yahaya Bello had openly boasted that the All
Progressives Congress in Kogi State will capture all elective positions in the state come 2019. In a bid to ensure that this happens, Governor Yahaya Bello has set the machinery in motion, using the Commissioner of Police, Kogi, State, to stop me from carrying out my political campaigns in the build-up to 2019 general elections.
THE TORRENTS OF POLITICALLY MOTIVATED ATTACKS ON MY PERSON
As part of this plot to eliminate me at all cost, the Kogi State Government under Yahaya Bello, sponsored a failed recall of my person as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The recall process failed, as my constituents, firmly stood by me, and refused to be bought over or enticed in any form. Governor Yahaya Bello, using the Nigeria Police, sent my name to the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol), for me to be declared wanted and arrested, and the Interpol, having seen the political undertone behind the sinister plan, through
their operatives, declined such shameful application. It is
pertinent to note that this action was taken notwithstanding that I am a serving Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, that the Nigeria Police knew my office, and home, yet, they decided to send my name to the Interpol.
I have written several petitions to the Inspector General of
Police, alerting him of plans to assassinate me, by Governor Yahaya Bello, using the Commissioner of Police in Lokoja. No response was gotten in respect of these petitions and no action was taken by the Nigeria Police.
On the 24th of April, 2018, I was travelling, in the company of other members of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to Morocco for an official assignment, when I was rudely stopped and arrested by the operatives of the Nigerian Immigration, who openly told me, that they were acting on the instructions of the Nigerian Police. I eventually missed the flight and drove back to my home in Maitama, Abuja after my release by the operatives of the Nigeria Immigration Service, who denied me the opportunity of travelling to Morocco on an official engagement. Surprisingly Sir, more than 50 police
personnel besieged my home, barricading the street, stopping my family members, associates and well-wishers from entering or exiting my house.
It is interesting to note, Your Excellency Sir, without extending any form of invitation to me either through my office or home, that this same Police, who knew my home, sent letters to the Interpol, declaring me wanted, demanding for my arrest. The inexplicable siege on my house lasted for 24 hours, wherein I was neither allowed to move out nor my family members, political associates, friends and well-wishers allowed to either go in or out of my home.
Your Excellency sir, notwithstanding several attempts on my life, for which I wrote to the Nigeria Police, the Police mysteriously withdrew all the police security details attached to me. Despite letters from the Clerk to the National Assembly and the Senate President, the Police have neglected to restore my security details.
On Thursday, the 19th day of July 2018, while I was returning to my hometown, around Iya Junction, Ayetoro Gbede, Ijumu LGA, Kogi State, I was again attacked by armed Policemen who fired several shots at my vehicle. I escaped unhurt, as my car, was bulletproof.
Your Excellency Sir, the attempt on my life was after
the failure of the Kogi State Government through the
Commissioner of Police, Kogi State, to thwart or frustrate the commissioning of my constituency projects. The Kogi State Government, sponsored thugs who destroyed some of my constituency projects including classrooms which I was going to commission.
My constitutionally guaranteed rights to life, freedom of
movement, and expression, as provided for, under the
Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as altered, is under imminent and constant threat by the conduct of the Commissioner of Police, Kogi State, sponsored by Gov. Yahaya Bello.
Your Excellency Sir, I have been wantonly arrested, and
detained, embarrassed and humiliated by the Nigeria Police, sponsored by Governor Yahaya Bello, of Kogi State.
The continued threats and attempts to assassinate me, or arrest and detain me, by the Commissioner of Police Kogi State, sponsored by Governor Yahaya Bello, will not cease, except by your urgent intervention. I am a law-abiding citizen who has great respect for law and order and would not do anything to undermine the law. My only sin, for which Governor Yahaya Bello, is desperately seeking to assassinate me, is my stand against his failed
administration, which has impoverished Kogi State indigenes.
The Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, is not relenting, in his avowed determination to assassinate me at all cost. Just recently, on the 12th of October 2018, the Commissioner of Police Kogi State, sent armed Policemen, to my hometown, around 1 am in the morning, to assassinate me.
Your Excellency, I am a serving Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. My office and abode are very well known to the Nigeria Police. I wonder why the same police, in the early hours of the 12th day of October 2018, would come to arrest a sitting and serving Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, like a common criminal, if there was no sinister motive.
Your Excellency Sir, on the previous day, I held several Political meetings in Lokoja, and other venues in Kogi West Senatorial District and no police personnel came to arrest me, all through the daytime, the previous day. The Nigeria Police have withdrawn my Police security since April 2018 and have refused all requests, by well-meaning Nigerians, to restore same. I am standing trial over spurious criminal allegations in five different
courts, in Nigeria.
The list of the politically motivated attacks on
my person, Your Excellency, is inexhaustive:
REFUSAL BY THE NIGERIA POLICE TO COMPLY WITH AN ORDER OF COURT TO RELEASE MY INTERNATIONAL PASSPORTS TO ME
Your Excellency Sir, I was standing trial before His Worship, Hon. Mabel T. Segun Bello of Magistrate Court No. 2, Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, in Charge No: CR/12/18. I was granted bail, and following the bail condition imposed by the court, my International Passports was kept in the custody of the Nigeria Police.
However, Your Excellency Sir, on the 25th of July, 2018, the
Charge No: CR/12/18, in which I was standing trial before
Magistrate Court, Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, was struck out and this followed a Notice of Discontinuance filed by the Nigeria Police.
The trial Magistrate Court consequently, made an order, to the effect that my International Passports be released to me, forthwith. Notwithstanding the valid order of a court, the Nigeria Police, have continued to seize and forcefully withhold my International Passports despite repeated demands, from me.
Your Excellency Sir, I believe that the refusal of the Nigeria Police, to obey an order of the court, is not just ordinary, but accentuated by their deep-seated malice against me, sponsored by the Kogi State Governor.
MY HUMBLE PRAYERS
Your Excellency Sir, may I therefore, most humbly and
respectfully urge you, to call the Nigeria Police to order. It is very clear, given the chronology of events as encapsulated in this petition, that the Kogi State Governor is using the Nigeria police, in his bid to stop my political ascendency, to assassinate my person. I have made several reports to local and International organisations, to alert them of the looming plot, to kill me, by Governor Yahaya Bello, using the Nigeria Police Force, especially, the Commissioner of Police, Kogi State. I firmly believe that the security of lives and property of every
Nigerian citizen should be of paramount concern to the
government. I respectfully demand that you direct the Nigeria Police, under the Inspector General of Police, to restore my security details, especially during this campaign period.
May I further urge you, most respectfully Sir, to call the Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, to order.
I pray that my petition will receive your urgent attention, given persistent threats to my life.
