Ebonyi State governor, Chief Dave Umahi, yesterday said his predecessor, Chief Martin Elechi did not leave N46billion internal debt for him contrary to speculations in some quarters in the state.
There was a report credited to a former member of his cabinet that under Umahi’s administration, the state Domestic Debt Stock rose by 36.78% from N34, 168, 940, 626. 65 in 2015 to N46, 737, 752, 798. 83 in 2019.
But the governor described it as falsehood, saying he had not owed anybody external debt since he came on board as his predecessor’s external debt was not more than N2million deducted which was not from the former governor’s administration.
Umahi, who spoke during live broadcast, said “I support exposing corruption and evil done against humanity but to wake up without checking facts is very bad. I saw where somebody wrote on Facebook that internal debt since 2015 is N46billion.”
He went on: “Elechi did not leave internal debt of N46billion to me and that in 2019 the thing increased by N12billion.
“There is no such case and it is my former Secretary to the state government. He said that external debt was over N400million left by Elechi and I increased it by N100million. I have not owed anybody external debt since I came on board.
“Elechi’s external debt is not more than N2milion that is deducted and it wasn’t from him, it is when we were in old Anambra and Imo States.
“And so, as it stands now, neither me nor my predecessor took external loan but somebody found it easy to write falsehood.”
