Senegal international M’Baye Niang scored a goal as Stade Rennes handed a reality check to Paris Saint-Germain who could have used the talent of Neymar in the 2-1 loss suffered by the defending champions in Ligue 1 on Sunday night.
Neymar has been overlooked by the French giants as speculation over his future lingers, with Thomas Tuchel’s side relinquishing a 1-0 lead to fall at the Roazhon Park against the reigning Coupe de France holders.
Edinson Cavani had given PSG a 36th minute lead but Niang, who fired failed to score for Senegal at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), equalised for Rennes a minute before half-time before Romain Del Castillo got the winner two minutes into the second half.
Rennes held on to get the win despite PSG’s best efforts to salvage a point from the encounter, with the result leaving the Parisians in eighth place with three points, behind Rennes in second place with six points on the Ligue 1 table led by Lyon who are yet to concede a goal after two matches.
Can PSG retain the French league title without Neymar who has been linked with a return to Barcelona just two years after leaving Camp Nou?
