Sokoto Launches 2021 Tree Planting Campaign With 2 million Seedlings

In effort to ensure and sustain reforestation against desertification, droughts and environmental degradation in the state, Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has launched the 2021 tree planting campaign with 2 million seedlings.

Flagging off the campaign at the Kilgori market in Yabo local government area of the state, Gov. Tambuwal emphasized the significance of the exercise to humanity and the state.

Lamenting the attitude of people frequently felling trees for firewood and other commercial gains, the Governor said it was necessary to take advantage of the programme by planting trees of economic values to the people.

The governor also urged the ministry for local government to establish a 2 km shelterbelt in each local government area of the state, while directing the 23 local government councils in the state to adopt and implement same.

Assuring that the state government would partner with the local governments to ensure that communities were involved in the smooth implementation of the programme at all levels.

Tambuwal also appealed to all the stakeholders to join hands with the state government, particularly the ministries of environment and local government affairs for all to support the initiative of this year which surpasses that of last year by 1 million seedlings.

In his remarks Sultan Sa adu Abubakar thanked Governor Tambuwal for his support and cooperation to the ministry of environment and the Zakkat and Waqf commisson for their efforts in planting trees in the state.

The Sultan also tasked leafers of all class to protect our environment by planting trees

In his address the commissioner of environment Sagir Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa said the theme of this year’s campaign is: “Promoting Agro-Forestry TowardsSustainable Economic Development.”

He said the ministry’s approach to the task of tree planting is breaking with normal practice of the exercise for the promoting agro – forestry.

Highlight of the ceremony were the presention of the two thematic papers on the importance and significance of tree planting by Dr Murtala Dangulla of the department of geography of Usmanu Danfodio University, Sokoto (UDUS) and Malam Lawal Mai doki, the Executive Chairman of the Zakkat and Waqf Commission, Sokoto.
